Even the two for a penny candy I once enjoyed now cost $1.25 a bag, But at least most of the Ingredients are still real. As a Late Boomer / Gen Jones, I’ve long given up on most modern brands. Preferring instead the classics of my youth (Mary Janes, Bit of Honey, and Peanut Butter Bars). I remember going to our Granddad and Grandma’s store in Brunswick. There we would spend the weekend playing in the grey sandy soil. While Granddad and Dad would cut and wrap fresh meat to bring back home.
I remember the disgusting smell of the Hercules Plant on the river and how the smell hung all over town. As relief we were often treated to an afternoon at the beach with the clean salty air. But my fondest memory was always getting a quarter from our Dad so we could buy a bag full of candy before leaving the store. Before getting back home we’d all get car sick on the way up the two-lane highway. A few years back I decided to take old Hwy 17 back down to Brunswick instead of the Interstate. It wasn’t as bad as I remember, considering most of it is now a four lane expressway. But long gone were some of the memories and although Jekyll Island has been developed. You can still find a grove of scrub oaks to find some shade in a few hidden places. I guess my point here is, memories aren’t such a bad thing, but our minds have an interesting way of picking and choosing the things we remember. So as we desire to cling to such peaceful memories, there are often a bad memories lingering about. For those memories we must learn to accept, forgive, and release the pain they may cause. It’s often not an easy process; it may take years to uncover. But that recovery may be the key to releasing that bit of honey lingering in your soul.
