Find Your Joy

There’s nothing more intimidating for a writer or an artist then to stare at a blank screen or canvas. For me it’s a moment of dread, especially after a restless night of sleep. So I come into my office, thankfully not having to smell paint, and stare into that damn blinking cursor. But even with a bad sinus headache eventually the emotions flow. Almost like a job, but not a job because there’s such a feeling of satisfaction after I am done. But don’t think that just because you are not a writer or painter that it can’t happen to you.

What if you’re a diesel mechanic or an office manager? Where you have trouble with the timing or have to cover for a sick employee. Each task that’s certain skills and knowledge. It may take finesse and a gentle hand or the strength of a ball peen hammer to get each of those jobs done. So no matter how mundane or tedious you find your work. Hopefully there’s some level of skill and satisfaction in it. Just yesterday I spoke with two customer service representatives about two very different problems. Never in my working life could there ever be a more abusive job then being a customer rep.

But much to my surprise both representatives were helpful and knowledgeable in solving my problems. So my point is while we all love to have some powerful job where we can create and shape opinions. Even a lowly office manager or mechanic may be the one to brighten an otherwise bad day. Never think of yourself as never being good enough. Admit your mistakes and learn from them, and at the very least try to do your best. And if things still aren’t working out, then go somewhere else. Just realize that it’s often the fear of what will happen that makes the work a joy
